Fear of Global Warming is Rising... But is the Temperature?

Apparently that fact professed tirelessly by the media and political spokesmen is, in fact, debatable. Maybe, like Rich and me, you think that global warming is actually a power-driven hoax utilized by fear-mongers to the detriment of scientific judgment and misappropriation of attention and funds... but maybe not. As an 11 year old kid, I was traumatized by the threat of global warming, almost debilitatingly so, because of a ridiculously dramatized TV special called "After the Warming." Now, I'm aware that the scientific theories presented in this powerful, fear-driven piece of environmental propaganda were unfounded as none of the catastrophic changes predicted over the next 15 years (it's now been 17 years since the show aired) actually occurred. Hmm. Yet, the program was shown to my 6 grade science class and taught as fact. Now, after reflecting on all the fear I suffered, I'm upset. Is anyone else tired of all the fear propaganda we're bombarded with daily in the media? It's becoming more evident that we shouldn't believe everything we are told by the mainstream media. I just read a fascinating book called "The State of Fear" by Michael Crighton. It's packed with theories and scientific facts controversial to the global warming claim intermixed with a thrilling adventure that spans the globe as a handful of enlightened professionals race the clock to prevent man-made catastrophes, staged to look like the products of extreme climate change due to global warming. No one really knows if our global temperature is destined to change or even if the effects would be harmful to our world but it gives us something to speculate. I recommend reading this book. Crighton's convincing arguments against global warming will blow you away. Then, when you're done, share your thoughts.
As an aside, Rich and I still support efforts to recycle and limit waste and pollution, for health reasons, as well as the obvious benefits of not wasting resources and having a clean environment.

Jack is Jack

I was reflecting on the list of favorite Jack characters we compiled before Jack Riley was born. After recently immersing myself into the show "Lost," (all 4 seasons can be viewed in HD for free at: http://abc.go.com/primetime/lost/index?pn=index)
I've determined that Gina, you're right, Jack Shepard must be added as a much worthy Jack.

In reviewing our list, I've determined that the Jack that our little guy most closely resembles would have to be Jack Bauer because like Bauer, our Jack handles torture like a champ (administered by his big bro David), and he can go 24 hours without sleeping. Too bad his parents can't.

So I Think I Can Dance

Maybe I don't dance well... but apparently I can dance the Zumba! If you haven't heard of it, it's the latest fad in the exercise world. I just attended a class at my gym this morning, and man, was it a blast! I haven't had that much fun since a few high school friends (you know who you are) and I terrorized poor LuAnn Preston during her aerobic's classes a decade ago. Zumba incorporates latin and international music in a dance/exercise routine that includes the styles of salsa, merengue, samba, belly dancing, cumbia, flamenco and reggaeton. Zumba is said to "magically motivate the body to efficiently burn calories, tone all muscle groups, incorporate full range of motion, and improve the cardiovascular system." But can it return my body to its pre-pregnancy state? We shall see. All I know is that is was fun, and I was dripping with sweat at the end (a good sign). Naturally, since I can't dance any of the before mentioned styles, I just made stuff up (just like we did in LuAnne's class), which included mostly prancing around, flailing my arms, and using moves bearing a striking resemblance to Kate's "uncoordinated dance." I just ignored the dirty looks from the fitness informercial-looking snobs around me. Fortunately, the instructor is a friend and thinks I'm funny. That was my best dancing since spontaneously dancing a pre-show with Jaime before the Little Shop of Horrors play at Utah State. Jaime... I think you were meant to Zumba too! So I recommend anyone looking for a new work-out to check this one out. They offer it at most gyms now or you can get the DVD online.

We cut the golden surfer locks...

Yep, Rocky officially has a little boy haircut now. It took Momma C and I holding him down, and we had to cut it at the Kid's Cuttin' Corral, where he sat in an elephant and watched Spongebob Squarepants. The poor girl cutting his hair deserved the balloon and lollipop more than he did, but we're proud of him. Though I do miss that curly do.

(In these pictures, he is "punching out a bad ghost.")

Also, a lady at the gym told me that Jack could be a Gerber baby. I'm a little biased as his momma, but what do you think?

Highlights of the Week

1. We discovered that Jack is not just a grumpy baby after all. Whenever Jack was awake, he was upset. We were used to baby Rocky, who smiled constantly by 3 weeks. Now Jack smiles and coos every time we look at him. It melts me every time. This could also be due to the fact that he is no longer colicky and now spits up less than half of every bottle. I am down to changing my shirt just THREE times a day!! Actually... I rarely bother. Who am I trying to impress? I think he's going to be a big talker like his big bro. He makes all kinds of funny sounds when you talk to him. He will be 3 months old in a few days and finally seems adjusted to life on earth.

2. Rocky has been so well-behaved that Rich has had to resort to disciplining the fish. He put the orange guy in time-out. (We stopped naming our fish since we realized that every time we named one, it immediately died). We are down to our last 2 unnamed fish. I hope I haven't just cursed this one by calling it "orange guy." I'll let you know.

3. Jack rolled over! This is a big landmark for the little guy. We knew it would happen soon as he has had Rocky as a very persistent little coach. Here he is in action:

4. I continue to teach Rocky his preschool lessons. I'm always impressed with his desire to learn the ABCs, numbers, etc but retention is not his forte. By the next day, he seems to have forgotten everything. I find myself teaching him the same things over and over. Any advice? Is this normal for 3 year olds or does mine have a short term memory problem? Maybe he is mocking me. I'm starting to wonder what the point is. At least it is something we do together that he enjoys.

Losing the Baby Weight

Not easy! Does anyone have any suggestions, tricks, money for lyposuction? I know... I know... diet and exercise. As I was contemplating all the crap I ate during my pregnancy, I came across this video. So true!! Watch and laugh!

If you have time, watch the other videos at the bottom of this link. They're pretty funny. If you're offended, remember that I didn't make them.
